London Grid for Learning – Maths in the Real World
Most pupils want to know why they are studying something; this is particularly significant in relation to the maths curriculum. Maths in the Real World is a unique collection of real world contexts where the role of maths is explored. The resources aim to engage both teachers and pupils in how maths is all around us and can be applied to not only everyday situations but also life and death situations. It encourages a move away from non-interactive textbook based maths lessons towards immersing the learner in a range of engaging real life situations that students can see the reason why maths is needed.
The resource provides an exciting range of resources that have differentiated levels of support to meet the needs of all learners. From Search and Rescue with HM Coastguard where the maths involved is a matter of life and death, to exploring the life expectancy of an iPhone and the contagion rates behind a biological outbreak of a virus.
In line with the National Curriculum, the activities are clearly signposted with teachers able to use either the detailed curriculum search alongside a quick search option, there is something for all ability levels for KS3, KS4 and KS5.
MEL Science – MEL Chemistry VR
MEL Science sees the future of STEM education as a blend of VR, AR, and hands-on learning, spanning both school and home use.
It’s new VR Chemistry app is the virtual reality component of this, it takes invisible atomic and molecular level chemistry concepts and makes them visible, and in turn, understandable experiences at a human scale. Students can ‘fly’ inside various molecules, build their own in an atomic level ‘makerspace’ and take quick quizzes to test understanding.
Making abstract concepts intuitive is one of the highest value use cases for VR; MEL Science has developed an effective learning resource, proven to engage students and improve test scores.
The MEL Science team includes several science Olympian winners and well-regarded educators, who together recognise the challenges that chemistry teachers face in the classroom. This virtual reality resource has integrated their knowledge and experience to build fundamental laws of nature into a gaming engine and deliver a ‘first’ in science education, usable today on classroom virtual reality kits.
Each lesson is three to seven minutes long and has been designed to integrate seamlessly into a teacher’s lesson flow; making the subject more visual and comprehensive.
Sparx – Sparx Maths
As a socially focused education technology company, Sparx has been reimagining the way maths is taught and learnt in schools since 2010. Our aim is to improve numeracy, and therefore life opportunities, for over five million learners by 2030 (#Ed5M).
Our long-term collaboration and development work with schools, combined with the experience of our team of educators, means we understand the challenges faced by school leaders, teachers and students and are passionate about helping.
The result is not an off-the-shelf software product – it is an approach to learning based on strategies that are founded in pedagogy and that relies on the world-class maths content that sets us apart. Underpinned by our sophisticated, adaptive technology platform and high levels of support, Sparx delivers progress and increases attainment in maths, in addition to acting as a catalyst for transformational change in many of our schools.
We are still at the start of our journey to motivate and engage learners while enabling teachers by providing them with deep insights, and we have big ambitions. Collaboration, creativity and innovation are embedded in our culture – a mindset we share with the schools with which we work.
Tassomai – Tassomai
Tassomai is a clever online learning program which teaches students while simultaneously feeding back data to their teachers to help them target intervention more effectively. The software helps students in years 9, 10 and 11 prepare for their GCSE science exams, and students in years 7 and 8 to study English, maths and science.
All of Tassomai’s content is unique, written by subject specialists and teachers, and matched to the exam board specification or national curriculum. This allows teachers to see the exact subject areas students are struggling with, allowing them to easily and efficiently target intervention.
Tassomai is built on several pedagogical principles; the questions are written in such a way that they both test and teach. When students answer questions incorrectly they receive instant corrective feedback, meaning the questions work as flashcards, reinforcing the concepts students need to know.
Students have a daily goal, which encourages them to spread their learning over as long a period as possible, breaking it down into manageable chunks. Simultaneously, Tassomai’s unique algorithms select the topics which most need attention, while encouraging interleaving and spacing – all methods of learning which have been scientifically tested and shown to be highly effective.
VotesforSchools – VotesforSchools
VotesforSchools brings democracy to the classroom by providing an easy way for both Primary and Secondary schools to teach and evidence British Values, PREVENT and SMSC. We create weekly ‘VoteTopics’ – fully planned and resourced lesson presentations that tackle many of the most pertinent issues facing young people today. Each lesson is framed as a question (such as ‘Has Brexit broken Parliament?’) meaning after the lesson students can access our online voting platform to vote on each question. Schools can evidence student voice this way, and we use the data collected to influence the work of policy makers, charities and the Government.
