Primary – Digital Learning Product – Language & Literacy
Serial Mash is an online library of books and activities for key stage 1 and 2 children. It aims to promote the enjoyment of reading and develop comprehension skills among all children, help teachers assess their pupils’ development over time and encourage parental involvement.
Three new books are published exclusively for the platform each half term and each one is accompanied by supportive learning resources linked to the themes in the chapter. Users also have access to the entire back catalogue of books and resources to use.
There are three different libraries for different age groups, a fourth to motivate and promote eager reading and a fifth dedicated to poetry.
Teachers can serialise any book for children and every child has their own online reading journal which automatically records any Serial Mash book they read and allows them to enter their own offline reading.
To boost engagement, professional actors contribute readings of every new book published. These are available as an e-reader, highlighting words as they are read, or as a video of the actor themselves.
With all these features and a lot more, Serial Mash is the online library for everyone in primary school education.

FFT Education – FFT Tutoring with the Lightning Squad
About Tutoring with the Lightning Squad
FFT’s Tutoring with the Lightning Squad is the only specialist reading tutoring programme in the UK which is approved by the National Tutoring Programme and used at scale in primary schools (700 schools, 35,000 pupils).
The tutoring is a blended approach with face-to-face tutoring supported by an online tutoring platform. The fun, game-based tutoring activities within the platform are designed and structured to improve reading skills, fluency, comprehension, spelling and phonics.
Regular tutor checks are built in and we provide online reports for tutors, teachers and school leaders which monitor pupils’ progress and reading attainment. This helps schools to monitor the impact of the tutoring on pupils’ reading skills and development.
In addition, FFT’s Reading Assessment Programme is included as part of the programme, the only assessment tool (in the UK) that assess’ decoding and fluency, as well as GPC’s.
Research has shown that pupils using the programme make progress of 3-5 months in reading attainment and 6 months’ progress with reading fluency.
About FFT
FFT is a not-for-profit organisation that provides expert data and literacy tools to support schools globally in improving pupil outcomes.
Fiction Express Education – Fiction Express
Fiction Express is an award-winning literacy resource designed to improve all areas of literacy: reading; writing; spelling, punctuation & grammar; and speaking & listening. The resource improves poor reading habits by getting children excited about reading through the power of a deeply engaging experience of co-creation between pupils and authors.
Fiction Express is offering teachers a unique and complete literacy solution:
- Covering all four aspects of literacy in line with the curriculum
• Easy to integrate into lesson planning
• Continuous assessment, monitoring learning outcomes and progress
• High level of pupil motivation and personalised, cross-curricular learning paths
• Great value for money, 80% (or more) cheaper than a similar amount of paper books (cost per pupil)
We publish our stories in weekly instalments; each week, pupils read the chapter and, at the end, are rewarded with the option to vote to decide what happens next. The author then writes the following chapter in real time.
Pupils also interact with the author and other readers worldwide on the online book forum to actively participate in the creative story-writing process. Outstanding and original pupil contributions are rewarded with certificates by our editorial team.

OxEd and Assessment – LanguageScreen
LanguageScreen is an app that provides an easy-to-administer, science-based assessment of Nursery and Reception age children’s language skills. It is designed for use by teachers and teaching assistants without any requirement for specialist expertise in educational psychology. The app provides a rigorous and objective measure of language skills, which complements teachers’ judgements of the language abilities of their pupils. A ten-minute LanguageScreen test administered by school staff was found to be similar in accuracy to a 30-minute language assessment conducted by a professional speech and language therapist, highlighting the app’s potential to help schools save valuable resources.
LanguageScreen reports help to identify pupils who would benefit from additional language support, so the app is often used in conjunction with language intervention programmes, such as the UK Department for Education-funded national rollout of the Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI). It has helped schools support tens of thousands of pupils.
Data from LanguageScreen and OxEd’s other assessment apps will, over time, generate insights into broader patterns of educational development and help schools provide a range of targeted and effective support for the children who most need it.
